Fixed Brace
This is the most common type of braces, often known as train-tracks. Brackets are glued onto the teeth and connected by a wire. Usually small elastic bands are used to hold the wire in position. The brackets can be metal or ceramic and the elastic bands may come in many colours.

Removable brace
This is sometimes recommended for correcting a simple problem, such as moving a single tooth. It is a plastic plate with delicate wires and springs attached. The removable brace should be worn all the time except when it needs cleaning or when you are playing sport. Removable appliances require care. Although you may notice an effect on eating and speaking along with an increase in the flow of saliva, you will eventually adjust to the appliance.

Functional brace
These are removable braces worn to alter the position of the jaws and the way the upper and lower teeth meet. The power of the jaw muscles is applied to move the teeth. They are usually worn on the upper and lower teeth at the same time. It is a very important type of brace and can achieve some dramatic results in the right cases. It works best in a growing patient. Their success totally depends on you wearing the braces well.

Retainers
At the end of treatment, all patients wear retainers to hold their teeth in the new position. These can be removable or fixed. Some people may need retainers for an extended period of time in order to eliminate shifting of the teeth. In some cases, permanent retention may be necessary. The retention period is an important part of your overall treatment and should not be neglected! Remember, wear them... in your mouth, not in your pocket. Retainers work when you follow our instructions.

Invisible brace
This is a new trend in tooth alignment correction. It consists of a series of removable clear plastic aligners that gradually achieve the same result of metal braces to align the teeth. The plastic is nearly invisible and can be removed when the patient wishes to eat or brush. Invisible braces are not recommended for more difficult cases or for people whose last molars have yet to erupt.

Lingual brace
Lingual braces are fixed behind your teeth, and are therefore invisible to other people. These are metal fixed braces which work by applying pressure to the back (lingual) tooth surface instead of the front. These braces allow you the benefit of correcting your problem without interfering with your appearance. They can be used on all cases to straighten teeth and correct bites including some of the more complex cases that invisible brace can not treat. They do take a little longer for the tongue to adjust to but usually after a week, they feel fine.
